2004 All Stars Concert

What a wonderful, wonderful effort! I was moved almost to tears by Steve Misson's revelatory report, but it is just the marvellous spirit of the Regiment I joined 63 years ago that made it such an emotional experience to read. It is all but impossible to think of it happening in any other circumstance. I have spoken to Paul (Neville) who was so full of praise for the incredible feeling of comradeship which provided the mainspring for the excellent musical performance. That so many organizations have benefited as a result is an added bonus and I am sure they will be among the first to add their voices in gratitude. That the audience can return, year after year bespeaks their profound enjoyment, enjoyment which is occasioned by the whole atmosphere, not just the musical experience.

It seems to me that if ever there was a case for a medal to be awarded then Paul Neville deserves it more than words can say. Perhaps everyone deserves one, but someone up there in the pantheon of people who smile fondly on the band's efforts should be seriously thinking of taking up the cudgels on his behalf. Paul would be the last person in the world to be looking for that sort of thing, and it is certain that he will be the last person to receive it unless a determined effort is made on his behalf. Knighthoods are awarded for smaller contributions from the business sector. Right, said my bit, the last thing is, could someone please put names to the excellent picture of the over 70's group. I thought I recognized only one and I am past the middle stage of that group, is that your smiling face Tom Merrett? Well done again, AC Green, Arthur Pragnell, Herbie Kenward, Georgie Keen, Vivian Dunn et al will be nodding their approval up in the Gods.

Tom Lambert
